VU.DOC
Copyright (c) ErgoSoft 1988, 89, 90
Version 1.4 - Oct 1990
This is the documentation file which accompanies the Shareware
program "VU". The program is distributed in a ZIP formatted
file (VU.ZIP) which can be unpacked (using the PKUNZIP
program) into the following files:
VU.DOC This file
VU.EXE The program
REGISTER.VU Program registration form
VU.PIF optional Windows 3.0 PIF file
VU.ICO optional Windows 3.0 icon for VU
( The VU program is also distributed on some bulletin boards
as a self-extracting program called VUPROG.EXE )
WHAT IS VU
VU is a program designed for personal computers running the
DOS operating system. The program reports utilization
statistics for each hard disk or network volume mounted on a
computer. It reports the capacity of each volume and the
amount of that capacity currently in use. It finishes with a
summary of total disk capacity and utilization.
For users of Microsoft Windows 3.0, VU is distributed with a
PIF file and icon file which configure it to operate under
Windows. When used in the 386 enhanced mode it starts up in
its own window.
VU is a Shareware program copyright by ErgoSoft. It is not in
the public domain. You are invited to try the program and see
if it meets your needs. If you decide to use the program
regularly, you are expected to pay for it.
WHAT IT COSTS TO REGISTER YOUR COPY
Single user cost is $20 (U.S. or Canadian) or the U.S.

The file REGISTER.VU contains a registration form which can
printed for your convenience. If an improved version of VU
exists when payment is received, ErgoSoft will provide an
updated copy to you at the address listed on the registration
form.
If you are not a resident of the United States, you are
welcome to send an equivalent payment in your currency in the
form of a cheque or postal money order.
You are encouraged to pass copies of VU on to others or to
upload it to bulletin boards or network systems. If you do
this, please send the self-extracting program VUPROG.EXE which
contains not only the VU.EXE program, but also the supporting
documentation files and Windows support files. This will take
less disk space, less time to transmit and will ensure that
the documentation file stays with the program.
WHAT YOU GET
The distributed version of VU contains all documentation and
information necessary to use the program, so no additional
documentation is sent when you register.
SUPPORT
Contact ErgoSoft if you have any difficulty using VU or if you
have suggestions for improvement. If any difficulties cannot
be resolved, your payment will be refunded. VU has been
tested on Novell networks and is expected to work on any "well
behaved" network system.
DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to
continue using the software to an updated program with printed
manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial
software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a
few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors
are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors,
and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases,
there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is
in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants
the right to copy and distribute the software, either to all
and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors
require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.
You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system
makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before
you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low
also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if
you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
"VU" is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the
warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
consequential, which may result from the use of "VU".
"VU" is a "Shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is
to provide personal computer users with quality software
without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
programmers to continue to develop new products. If you find
this program useful and find that you are using "VU" and
continue to use "VU" after a reasonable trial period, you must
make a registration payment of $20 to ErgoSoft. The $20
registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time. You must treat this software just
like a book. An example is that this software may be used by
any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being used at another.
Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
same time.
Anyone distributing "VU" for remuneration must contact
ErgoSoft for authorization. This authorization will be
automatically granted to distributors recognized by the
Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) as adhering to
its guidelines for Shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering "VU" immediately (However
ErgoSoft must still be advised so that the distributor can be
kept up-to-date with the latest version of "VU".).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of "VU" along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register
their copy if they find it useful. Please give them the file
"VU.ZIP". Using the PKUNZIP program, this file can be
extracted into the VU program and all of its documentation and
Window 3.0 support files. Thank you.
